About this episode
"The internet is down." It is the report everyone in this job has taken, and it can mean an unplugged cable, a failed switch power supply, an expired password, a website broken on someone else's servers, or a phone showing full signal and no connection. All five arrive worded the same way.
This episode gives you the question that separates them: which layer is this problem at?
We follow one message from an application on one computer, down through the layers, across the wire, and up into the application on the other side. Then we take all five complaints and sort them by layer. The episode finishes with the two addresses your computer carries, and why one of them is never enough.
